Steve Jecha For Minneapolis Park Board
Issues

Here are the highpoints of Steve's campaign platform:

Managing our Park System and Green Space -           "Clean Water, Clean Air, Clean Parks...."

  • Ensure plans are made for managing Emerald Ash Borer issues.
  • Develop plans to move Park Buildings 'Off the Grid' and environmentally friendly (e.g. Converting Parade Ice Arena from Freon (R22) system to GeoThermal system).
  • Maintaining trails and access points that serve people of all ranges and ability.
  • Protect natural resources while growing our Park System and green spaces.
  • Programming for residents and park users that educate regarding improving water and air quality and keeping invasive species (Zebra Mussels, Ash Borers, etc.) out of Minneapolis lakes and urban forests.
  • Lead efforts to establish public and private partnerships that enhance the management management of natural areas, waters, and urban forests.
Community Programming Growth -                         "Community Centers are the heart of our neighborhoods."

  • Ensure funding of the "Community Center Model" keeps ALL Minneapolis Community Centers running and providing programming for their neighborhoods.
  • Continuously increase programming for kids. Ranging from adding sports like Lacrosse to the park systems offerings, to  providing artistic, environmental, and social programs through our community centers.
  • Safety & Security - Ensure all parks are safe and secure places for our residents. Maintain Park Police staffing and maintain Park Police under the control of the Minneapolis Park Board. Continue to support the successful crime prevention programs and employees tasked with keeping our parks safe.
  • Promote neighborhood volunteerism through the local community centers/parks.
  • Tailor programs and services to the demographics and needs of the community.
An Independent Park Board is Best for Minneapolis  "The quality of our Park System, both environmentally and in neighborhood services, will be impaired/reduced by taking away system independence."

  • Minneapolis Parks should be Independent from the City of Minneapolis government operations.
  • Engage local businesses, corporations, foundations, and individuals to help meet financial needs to run the park system.
  • Continue to look for entrepreneurial opportunities - like Sea Salt at Minnehaha Park, or the Tin Fish at Lake Calhoun - that enhance the Park experience while respecting our parks and their immediate neighbors.
  • Improve and cultivate open communications with other governmental bodies including the City, Metropolitan Council, Minneapolis School Board, etc.
  • Find new ways - through entrepreneurial enterprises to corporate sponsorships - to ensure enough money is available to keep neighborhood recreation centers open and staffed.
